At the Huawei Cloud Summit 2024 on Tuesday, Huawei Cloud launched a new region in Egypt, becoming the first company to establish a public cloud in the country. The move further strengthens Huawei Cloud’s digital enablement strategy in Egypt and fully accelerates the local digital transformation process.

Cloud and AI technologies are not only a catalyst for the digital economy, but also a catalyst for social progress. At the summit, William Dong, President of Huawei Cloud Marketing, delivered a keynote speech titled “Cloud for Good: Enabling Innovation”, sharing Huawei Cloud’s philosophy of leveraging technology for the benefit of the whole society and launching the “Cloud for Good” initiative. Through cloud, AI, and other innovative technologies, a sustainable and promising future is on the horizon.

Keynote speech by William Dong, President of Huawei Cloud Marketing

Everything as a service in the cloud

Huawei Cloud envisions an intelligent future of “everything as a service.” Leveraging Huawei’s more than 30 years of digital transformation experience, rather than simply integrating global infrastructure resources or investing billions of dollars in cutting-edge technologies, Huawei Cloud’s mission is to turn all of this into cloud services, empowering everyone not only to succeed, but also to lead their digital journey. According to William, Huawei Cloud also envisions a future of “cloud for good,” and is committed to realizing this vision by focusing on education, environment, healthcare, and inclusion.

At the summit, these visions were illustrated through three stories.

AI medical assistants save patients’ lives

Huawei Cloud empowers the healthcare industry with the Pangu Medical Model, trained with high-quality data from 16 million academic journals and equipped with a knowledge graph of over one million, which acts as an intelligent assistant for doctors and patients in consultations, diagnosis, treatment, and personal health management.

“A hospital in China used the AI medical model to identify 11 patients with a rare disease called adrenal insufficiency in just three months, preventing misdiagnosis and saving lives,” said William. Runda Medical, a leading Chinese healthcare service provider, is developing a medical AI model based on Pangu, which is expected to be adopted by 4,000 hospitals for report interpretation and diagnosis, promoting comprehensive healthcare.

Open schools improve resilience and continuity of learning in basic education

Education is the cornerstone of society. Looking back at 2020, Huawei launched the Technology-Enabled Open School System for All (TeOSS) through partnerships with UNESCO and the Ministries of Education of Egypt, Ethiopia, and Ghana. The project aims to build a network connectivity and cloud platform to enable remote and inclusive education, whether in the classroom or at home.

The results have been impressive. In Egypt, 950,000 educators have improved their distance learning capabilities. In Ethiopia and Ghana, more than 16,000 students across 34 schools have gained access to digital resources. The project launched its second phase in Egypt, Thailand, and Brazil last month. Huawei is committed to working with partners to build digital education and make it more inclusive.

Restoring coral reefs in Mauritius

Mauritius is home to some of the world’s best coral reefs, providing a great resource for fishing and tourism for local people. However, these reefs face threats from pollution, overfishing, and climate change. “In collaboration with Ecomode Association and the University of Mauritius, we found the answer. We launched a project to cultivate and restore coral fragments. We use underwater sensors to collect real-time environmental data, such as weather, water quality, and marine life. We then send this data to the cloud for analysis. After almost three years of hard work, we were able to transplant 25,000 coral fragments from the nursery to degraded areas on the east coast of Mauritius,” said William.

Cloud for Good: Enabling Innovation in Egypt

“Each story shared above is a story of collaboration, innovation, and a strong belief that the cloud has the power to make a difference for each and every one of you.” Finally, William proposed the “Cloud for Good” initiative, calling on Egyptian customers and partners to work together in leveraging cloud and AI to accelerate the digitalization process and help Egypt achieve its Sustainable Development Goals in areas of current concern such as agriculture, education, healthcare, environment, water resources, and cultural heritage, benefiting more people, regenerating nature, and contributing to a better home for all.
