Alfredo Rodriguez (REIGN Storm Racing) and Sofia Arreola de Finsterwald (TWENTY24, Blue Ridge, Virginia) won the elite race at the Winston-Salem Cycling Classic (WSCC), the final points-earning round of the USA Crits Series.
With his win on Saturday, Rodriguez clinched the USA Crits men’s individual title and his fourth podium in the series. Roderick Asconegui Diaz (MC Cycling Team) was second overall, and a wave of REIGN Storm riders chasing the title rounded out the top five with Danny Summerhill in third, Brian Gomez in fourth and Jordan Parra in fifth. Michael Garrison (MGR p/b NICH Speed Club), who did not race in North Carolina, took the lap victory in the series.
Alexis Magner (L39ION, Los Angeles), who placed fourth in the WSCC, won the USA Crits women’s individual title by a wide margin over runner-up Harriet Owen (DNA Pro Cycling) and 3rd-place Kendall Ryan (L39ION, Los Angeles), who did not compete in North Carolina. Ivany Blondin (Goldman Sachs ETF) and Elizabeth Harden (Work Hard Be Humble Cycling) were 4th and 5th overall, respectively. Kaitlyn Lauwerda (DNA Pro Cycling) was the top women’s lap leader in the series.
In the series, REIGN Storm Racing won the men’s team overall championship, while Goldman Sachs ETFs Racing won the women’s team title.
The USA Crit includes six classic criterium races held in three southern states throughout April and May that offer a base prize of $200,000 to elite riders based on a combination of individual race prize money and series bonuses for the top 10 elite men, elite women and teams.
The final race in Winston-Salem featured a downtown course that looped around Bailey Park, which featured live concerts throughout the day.
Areola attacked on the final lap to take the win, and Heidi Praderas (Kingdom Elite Racing) and last year’s winner, Marlies Mejias, completed the women’s podium. Winston-Salem was the first and only race of the series for both Blue Ridge, Virginia natives, as they focused on stage races. Mejias has won four stages at Tour of the Gila, Tucson Bicycle Classic and Valley of the Sun, while Areola won a stage and the overall at Tucson Bicycle Classic.
In the men’s division, REIGN Storm Racing dominated the race, with Rodriguez winning by several bike lengths over Cole Davis in a solo run out of Ribble Rebellion, North Carolina. Alberto Ramos (CRCA/Foundation) was third.
