Redwood’s Teo Trono (4) waits to pitch during the first inning of a North Coast Section Division II semifinal against Ukiah on Wednesday, May 22, 2024, at Redwood in Larkspur, Calif. (Alan Depp/Marin Independent Journal)

All four College of Marin baseball and softball teams that competed for district titles this week were given the opportunity to continue their quest for a postseason title when the Northern California Regional bracket was released on Sunday.

The Redwood High School baseball team leads the way as the top-seeded Marin high school team in both tournaments and is the only team to have won a home game. The No. 3 Giants (26-4) will host No. 6 Carmel (23-6) in the NorCal Division II quarterfinals on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

All semi-finals will be played on Thursday and all finals will be played on Saturday.

Redwood is fresh off a 1-0 loss to Cardinal Newman in Saturday’s North Coast Section D-II championship game, and Tuesday’s win by Redwood sets up the possibility of an all-Marin semifinal at NorCal if seventh-seeded San Marin can upset second-seeded St. Ignatius.

The Mustangs (22-8), who beat Campolindo on Saturday to win the NCS D-III title, will travel to Pacifica to take on the Wildcats (20-10) at Fairmont Field on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

The newly crowned NCS DV champions from Branson School will also be competing at Norcalus as the No. 7 seed in the D-IV bracket. The Bulls (12-15) will travel to Sacramento to take on No. 2 seed Bradshaw Christian (29-1) on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

The Pride have won 13 straight games this season and have outscored their opponents 316-42.

San Rafael is the only Marin softball team remaining. The Bulldogs (23-4) are listed as the sixth seed in the D-III bracket and will face third-seeded Dixon (20-4) on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

If San Rafael advances to the semifinals, it could set up a rematch with No. 2-seeded Northern California team Cardinal Newman in Friday’s NCS D-III championship game. The Cardinal beat the Bulldogs 7-0 on Friday after being held scoreless through the first five innings.

College Lacrosse

Northwestern, featuring sisters Samantha and Madison Smith from Mill Valley, lost 14-13 to Boston University in the NCAA championship game on Sunday.

Northwestern (18-3) started strong, scoring six straight goals and holding Boston College (20-3) scoreless for the first 20 minutes. The Eagles outscored Northwestern 6-2 in the second quarter but trailed 8-6 at halftime.

Boston College took its first lead with under 10 minutes left in the game and held on to it the rest of the way.

Both Smith sisters are former star athletes at Tam High School. Samantha Smith was named to the All-MCAL First Team for the Red Tail Hawks in 2019. Madison Smith was named the league’s Player of the Year in 2023.

baseball

The San Rafael Pacifics scored 17 runs on 17 hits and recorded their fourth straight win since opening the season with a 17-7 home victory over Vallejo Seaweed on Saturday night.

Jason Summers earned the win, allowing seven runs in five innings while striking out seven. At the plate, Xavier Selway led the way with three hits.

San Rafael (4-0) will face the Dublin Leprechauns on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
