Predicting the upper and lower bounds of Virginia Tech Hokies’ win totals in 2024 |
of Virginia Tech Hokies They are looking to finish the 2023 season strong and continue that momentum into 2024, which will be their third season under the head coach. Brent Pry.
Ahead of the 2024 season, Andy Staples welcomed ACC Network’s Roddy Jones to his show. Andy Staples On3So the two broke down what to expect from the Virginia Tech Hokies this season, including what the upper and lower limits of a win for Virginia Tech might be.
Staples and Jones agreed Virginia Tech could win 10 games at the top level and compete in the ACC, but the two debated where the Hokies would be on the floor in 2024.
Ceiling: 10-2, ACC title favorites
For Andy Staples, the Virginia Tech Hokies are one of the most intriguing teams in the ACC, and the question is whether the end of 2023 was an aberration or a sign of things to come.
“When I was in the ACC conference talking to the people who know the league best and the coaches in the league, this team’s name came up a lot,” Andy Staples said. “Virginia Tech. Has Brent Pry completely turned this around?”
Meanwhile, Roddy Jones has faith in Brent Pry’s performance at Virginia Tech and expects the team to continue to make big strides in 2024.
“I think he’s really close. Pundits will say the schedule wasn’t as tough in the second half when they were really on form, but you look at the way they played and the way they came together. Chiron Drone“Offensively, this team has made great strides. I think one of the underrated parts of Brent Pry is he’s worked with two rookie coordinators and they’ve made great strides. You can see that. Early last year, Virginia Tech allowed a ton of big plays defensively. It was just big plays after big plays. They’ve had a year to fix that,” Jones said.
“Offensively, they’ve gotten so much better with Kyron Draughns at quarterback, so I really think they can go big this season. So, I like Virginia Tech.”
With all of this in mind, Roddy Jones has Virginia Tech at its best this season with a 10-2 record and sees the school winning the ACC Championship Game and possibly even making the College Football Playoff.
“Because when you look at the schedule, it’s not that hard. Miami and Clemson “You can scare them, you can’t scare anyone else,” Jones explained.
A big reason Jones thinks so highly of Virginia Tech is how much talent the team returns from last season.
“the other one is, Ali Jennings Ali Jennings is Old Dominion Two years ago, he dominated Virginia Tech. Last year, he was injured early in the season and didn’t play for most of the season. Beisch-TuttenBeischl-Tüten said: NFL“I thought maybe he was one of those guys that could be traded to some other team. He’s done a great job as a running back. He’s coming back,” Jones said.
“Daquan Felton I’m back. I’ve really grown as a receiver. I like this Virginia Tech team. I really like it. On the defensive line, Antwon Powell Ryland“At the end of the day, he might be the best edge rusher in the conference.”
Floor: Between 6-6 and 8-4
Andy Staples and Roddy Jones don’t agree on Virginia Tech’s minimum, with Jones believing the minimum is higher than Staples heading into next season.
“Floor-wise, I think,” Jones said, “Maybe 8-4, 7-5?”
The difference between the two floors, Staples explained, is that he looks at them from the perspective of what happens when everything goes wrong.
“It’s a higher minimum than I wanted, but I’m OK with it. I put it at 6-6 just to be safe,” Staples said. “When I set a minimum, I’m setting a contingency. Looking at the schedule and the toss-ups, I think 7-5 or 8-4 is a realistic minimum.”
At that point, Roddy Jones looked at the schedule and got the impression that this team should win most of its games.
“I can see the scenario. I don’t think they’re going to lose to Vanderbilt.” Marshall “It’s not the Marshall team from last year or the year before. Old Dominion is an interesting team.” Ricky Rahne There was some momentum at times last year. Rutgers“That’s something that could cost us that game if it doesn’t go our way,” Jones said.
“after that, Boston College, Georgia Institute of TechnologyIt could go the other way, but at the end of the day, I like this Virginia Tech team a lot, and I think they’re closer to winning by double digits than they are to competing for a bowl game.”
