Modi won the 2014 Indian Lok Sabha elections with 56.37 percent of the votes, beating Arvind Kejriwal, leader of the Ahmed Aadmi Party (AAP), who got 20.3 percent.
In 2019, Modi also won with 63.62 percent of the votes, beating Shalini Yadav of the Samajwadi Party (SP) who got 18.4 percent.

Ajay Rai, a BJP candidate from Varanasi, also contested elections in 2014 and 2019 but lost both times. The 53-year-old BJP leader has 18 cases against him.
The BSP candidate from Varanasi constituency, Asar Jamal Lari (70), has only one case pending against him. He joined the party after the 2022 state assembly elections.

No case has been filed against Kolisetti Siva Kumar, 46, of the Yuga Tulasi Party. Kumar said his main issue in the 2024 elections was for the central government to declare the cow the national animal of India.
