Leicester City striker Tom Cannon has been called up to the Republic of Ireland senior squad for his first time for next month’s friendlies against Hungary and Portugal.

Cannon, 21, has made 13 appearances in the Championship this season, scoring two goals and helping the Foxes return to the Premier League.

The Liverpool-born striker has been capped once by the Republic of Ireland Under-21s.

Republic of Ireland caretaker manager John O’Shea has recalled Celtic centre-back Liam Scales and Holland-based striker Troy Parrott, who missed the friendlies against Belgium and Switzerland in March, while Stoke City left-back Enda Stevens is also back in the squad.

Southampton’s Gavin Bazunu is absent from the national team through injury, with Bristol City’s Max O’Leary and Fleetwood Town’s goalkeepers Caoin Kelleher and Mark Travers making up the national team instead.

Norwich City defender Shane Duffy is included on the list despite being arrested and charged with drink driving following a two-car collision in Heathersett, near Norwich, earlier this month.

Brentford centre-back Nathan Collins will miss the friendly with a knee injury, while Luton Town’s Chiedozie Ogbene will miss the match for family reasons.

Ireland host Hungary at the Aviva Stadium on 4 June before facing Portugal in Aveiro seven days later.
