EMERYVILLE — Pixar Animation Studios has decided to cut more than 100 jobs at the “Toy Story” maker’s headquarters complex in the East Bay, a grim reminder of the precarious state of the entertainment industry.

In a latest blow to the tech industry, the animation studio revealed plans to cut 181 jobs in Emeryville, according to official documents Pixar filed with the state labor department.

The job cuts are set to take effect July 26 of this year, Pixar, a subsidiary of Walt Disney Co., said in a WARN notice filed with the state Employment Development Department.

Burbank-based Disney has been warning Wall Street of its massive cost-cutting plans for more than a year. In November, Disney released its latest plans, totaling $7.5 billion in cuts of all kinds.

Emeryville-based Pixar described the job cuts as “permanent,” according to a post on the EDD website.

Since 2022, technology companies have been cutting jobs as they shift resources to promising new ventures such as artificial intelligence and also try to reverse the hiring spree the tech industry underwent during the coronavirus pandemic, when remote work became widespread.

Pixar’s cuts may have to do with other issues, such as the disparity in Hollywood’s box office, where movies are not doing so well in attendance.
