Tuscaloosa, Alabama – University of Alabama men’s basketball freshman Derrion Reed has been selected to the 2024 USA Basketball Men’s U-18 National Team, the U.S. Men’s Junior National Team Committee announced. Following a four-day training camp in Colorado Springs, Reed was chosen as one of 12 players to represent the United States at the 2024 FIBA U-18 Men’s America’s Cup, to be held June 3-9 in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Reed is the second player from Alabama to be selected for the USA U-18 National Team, joining JaMychal Green, who was on the 2008 team. Reed also becomes the first player to represent the United States since Kira Lewis Jr., who was on the 2019 FIBA U-19 World Cup team.
Reed, a 6-foot-8 forward from Grovetown, Georgia, is a 2024 McDonald’s High School All-American and is ranked as the No. 11 recruit overall by ESPN, the fourth-highest rated recruit in program history behind Collin Sexton. Brandon Miller and J.D. Davison.
In the 2024 FIBA U18 Men’s America’s Cup, USA Basketball will begin Group B play against Argentina, Belize and Brazil. The US Men will play their opening match against Argentina on June 3 at 6:10 PM CST. On June 4, the US team will face Belize, who will be playing in the tournament for the first time, and Group B play will conclude on June 5 against Brazil. Both Belize and Brazil matches will kick off at 3:40 PM CST.
