The Houston Texans continue to invest in their offense, especially around quarterback CJ Stroud.
The Texans are inking a $72 million contract extension with wide receiver Nico Collins, according to multiple reports. The Athletic’s Dianna Russini reports the deal is for three years. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports the extension is worth up to $75 million, with $52 million guaranteed.
Collins, 25, emerged as one of the NFL’s most productive receivers and a favorite target for Stroud last season during his rookie season. In 15 games, including 10 starts, Collins recorded 80 catches for 1,297 yards and eight touchdowns, by far his most productive season in his three NFL seasons.
Collins’ performance led to Stroud receiving NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year honors and a historic rookie season. Stroud exceeded all reasonable expectations in 2023, completing 63.9% of his passes for 8.2 yards per attempt, 273.9 yards per game, with 23 touchdowns and five interceptions. He led the NFL in interception percentage and passing yards per game.
His performance led the Texans to the AFC South title and their first playoff appearance since 2019. They then beat the Cleveland Browns in the wild-card round but lost to the Baltimore Ravens in the divisional round.
The Texans then added weapons around Stroud in offseason trades for four-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Stefon Diggs and former Cincinnati Bengals Pro Bowl running back Joe Mixon. Diggs will be a key part of a strong receiving unit that also features Collins and 2023 breakout rookie Tank Dell.
The Texans secured Collins a contract through the 2027 season through a lucrative extension that included a significant pay increase. Collins was a third-round pick in the 2021 draft and was scheduled to enter this season in the final year of a four-year, $4.87 million rookie contract with a base salary of $3.1 million in 2024.
Houston has high expectations for next season and beyond.
