Following the conclusion of spring practice across the nation, USA Today released their new composite rankings for the entire FBS, and coming in at No. 29 overall, the Liberty Flames were the highest-ranked team from a non-powerhouse conference to appear on the list.
Other notable Group of 5 teams closely following Liberty include No. 32 Boise State University, No. 34 James Madison University and No. 35 University of Memphis.

In 2023, the Liberty represented the Group of Five in the New Year’s Six and faced the Oregon Ducks in the Fiesta Bowl. Last season they finished with a 13-1 record. The Flames also won the Conference USA Championship in their first season as members of the league.
With starting quarterback Kaydon Salter back and solid running back Quinton Cooley joining the mix, expectations are high for coach Jamie Chadwell’s team despite losing key veterans on the defensive side of the ball.

The Flames will open the 2024 season on August 31 against the FCS Campbell Camels. The Flames are once again considered the favorites to win Conference USA, and if they play a similar style of football to their Fiesta Bowl performance last season, they will likely make it to the College Football Playoff.
The Group of Five teams with the highest ranking by the College Football Playoff selection committee will be included in the 12-team field.
