A former University of New Mexico student-athlete will receive an unusual invitation this summer to further his future career in sports.

Maddie Deuchar, who is set to graduate in 2024, starred on the college women’s swimming and diving team and is one of just 200 student-athletes invited to the NCAA Sports Forum in Indianapolis this week.

The three-day event is an educational program and networking opportunity for student-athletes selected from three divisions (D1, D2 and D3) to learn and explore future careers in sports.

“I am honored to have been selected as I believe I will be able to make great connections at this conference and represent the university at a national level,” Deuchar said.

Deucher, who has a master’s degree in sports administration, said she was recommended by Amy Begin, UNM’s director of athletic compliance.

Deuchar calls Begin his “greatest mentor” and says he has influenced his journey.

“Amy has been one of my biggest supporters and I know I can rely on her for anything. I am grateful that I was selected; it is proof that Amy made the right decision in nominating me to this council,” Deucher said.

The El Paso, Texas, native majored in psychology, but the COVID-19 pandemic made it difficult for her to imagine life without sports, which she says ultimately led her to a career in sports administration.

The Sports Forum will take place from May 30th to June 2nd.
