However, the team has not performed very well in this format since the T20 World Cup in 2022. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has replaced four presidents during this period and even tried a different captain in Shaheen Afridi for one series, but the plan was abandoned ahead of the major tournament.
Pakistan are also among the World Cup teams that will not play any warm-up matches, opting instead to take part in three-match and four-match T20 series against Ireland and England respectively.
How is Pakistan performing in T20 cricket beyond the 2022 World Cup?
The table below gives a quick rundown of how the Pakistan Cricket Team has performed in the last 24 T20Is since finishing as runners-up in the 2022 tournament.
Pakistan Record | result |
---|---|
Four-match series against England (away) | Lost 0-2 |
Three-match series against Ireland (away) | 2-1 victory |
Five-match series against New Zealand (home) | 2-2 draw |
Five-match series against New Zealand (away) | Lost 1-4 |
Pakistan vs Bangladesh (Hangzhou Asian Games) | lost |
Pakistan vs Afghanistan (Hangzhou Asian Games) | lost |
Pakistan vs Hong Kong (Hangzhou Asian Games) | Winner |
2023 Five-match series against New Zealand (H) | 2-2 draw |
Three-match series against Afghanistan in 2023 (A) | Lost 2-1 |
To summarise, Pakistan have performed poorly, winning just nine of the 24 T20Is they played. Six of those nine wins came against relatively weaker opposition (one against Hong Kong, two against Ireland and three against a weakened New Zealand).
In addition to this, the team will go into the World Cup T20 2024 having lost two games in the four-match series against England with the remaining two matches being called off due to rain.
