Kaia Gerber has been all about “double” styling lately. Last week, the model hit the road over Memorial Day weekend with two designer totes slung over her arms. This week, Gerber’s not just doubling down on accessories, she’s doubling down on bottoms, too.
While out and about in Los Angeles on Thursday, May 30, Gerber showed off what may be a polarizing trend for many: She rocked a micro mini skirt layered over flared pants, a look that harkens back to the early 2000s.
Gerber was photographed emerging from a casting session wearing a navy blue short-sleeve crop top, but the tiny t-shirt revealed a bit of her midriff. The ab-baring top wasn’t the only focal point of the outfit. While keeping the rest of her look in focus, Gerber subtly harkened back to the early 2000s by pairing the casual shirt with light khaki Paloma Wool Archive trousers. The straight-leg pants reached her ankles and incorporated a wraparound skirt detail at the waist.

Gerber otherwise wore simple black ballet flats instead of her usual sneakers, carried her essentials in a white canvas tote bag slung over her shoulder, a water bottle in her hand, and black oval sunglasses rounded off the “model-actress going out” look.

Gerber’s latest sighting comes a week after she was spotted departing Manhattan by helicopter with friends over Memorial Day weekend. Her travel outfit consisted of a blueberry button-down cardigan, black trousers, and ballet flats. Instead of a suitcase for the short weekend getaway, she packed her belongings into a navy blue Paloma wool tote bag and a monogrammed Celine duffle bag.

Gerber isn’t the only one to endorse the Y2K-inspired skirt-and-pants look: In February, YouTube-turned-fashion star Emma Chamberlain stepped out in all black at the Courrèges Fall 2024 ready-to-wear runway show. During Fashion Week, she opted for a midriff-baring halter top paired with a mini skirt and wide-legged pants.

Kendall Jenner is another celebrity who subscribes to this controversial outfit formula: While promoting 818 Tequila in Miami, Jenner was photographed wearing a navy blue mini dress over flared pants rather than a skirt.
Celebrities aside, designers from Sandy Liang to Chopova Lowena to Collina Strada are all adamant about bringing the skirt and trouser combo back into the fashion week mainstream. With Gerber being another fashion star championing the style, it’s only a matter of time before this controversial trend becomes popular again. In other words, fashion always repeats itself.
