Kyle Teal hit a three-run homer with two outs in the ninth inning to tie the game and Tyler Miller hit a game-winning RBI single in the 10th inning as the Portland Sea Dogs defeated the Altoona Curve, 8-6, in an Eastern League game on Friday night in Altoona, Pennsylvania.

The Sea Dogs nearly wasted a stellar performance from starting pitcher Hunter Dobbins, who gave up just three hits and one walk over seven innings and led 3-0. Altoona rallied for six runs in the bottom of the eighth against relievers Hercris Olivares and Robert Kwiatkowski. Joe Perez hit a grand slam homer, followed by a solo homer by Carter Binns to make it 6-3.

Portland took the lead in the fourth inning when Tyler McDonough singled, advanced on a wild interception and scored on a Nick York single.

Matthew Lugo homered in the seventh inning and the Sea Dogs took a 3-0 lead in the eighth on consecutive singles by McDonough, Marcelo Mayer and Teal.

Miller sent automatic runner Edinson Paulino home with a single in the 10th, and Nick Decker brought in another run on a grounder.

Dobbins recorded eight strikeouts.

Women’s Lacrosse: Riley Davis scored six goals and assisted on two more, and Falmouth (14-0) completed its unbeaten regular season with a 13-5 win over Massabesic (8-6) in Falmouth.

Peaches Stacker added two goals and three assists, while Keira Alcock also scored two goals.

Sydney Cyr and Finley Pomerleau each scored two goals for Massavesic.

LPGA: Wichanee Meechai became the latest surprise in a U.S. Women’s Open filled with surprises, firing off four straight birdies to shoot a 3-under 67 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, her lowest score of the week, to take a two-stroke lead.

Meechai is a 31-year-old Thai player whose only victory recognized in the women’s world rankings came nine years ago at the Taiwan LPGA. She has played in 20 majors but has never finished in the top 10. She is at 4-under 136, two strokes behind Angela Lee and three strokes behind former Women’s Open winners Minjee Lee (69) and Yuka Sasao (71).

Several big-name players failed to make the cut, including world number one Nelly Korda, Lexi Thompson, Rose Zhang, Lydia Ko, Brooke Henderson and defending champion Alisen Corpuz.

Korda bounced back from a first-round 80 to shoot a par-70, but bogeyed the final hole when he needed a birdie to make the cut. Korda had won six of his previous seven starts, including his second major title at the Chevron Championship.

PGA: Ryan Fox made a 14-foot birdie putt to shoot 6-under 64 and share the second-round lead with Robert MacIntyre at the RBC Canadian Open in Hamilton, Ontario.

MacIntyre shot a morning 66 for his second consecutive bogey-free round. The two unbeaten PGA Tour leaders are tied at 10-under 130.

Joel Dahmen finished in third place, two strokes behind, with a 65.

European Tour: British golfer Rory Canter shot a bogey-free 7-under 66 to take a three-stroke lead in the second round of the European Open in Hamburg, Germany.

Kanter, who also plays on the LIV Golf Breakaway Circuit and is ranked 224th in the world, was 12 under par for the tournament.

Jannick de Bruyne of Germany (73) and Niklas Norgaard of Denmark (68) tied for second place.

Tyson vs. Paul: The fight between Mike Tyson and Jake Paul was postponed after the 57-year-old Tyson fell ill on a flight last weekend.

Tyson and Paul said they would announce a new fight date next week. They were scheduled to fight on July 20 in Arlington, Texas.

Tyson hasn’t fought professionally since June 2005, but he has continued to train regularly for several years, and in November 2020 he had an entertaining exhibition bout against Roy Jones Jr.

maternity leave: Football’s international governing body is implementing new measures to better support the wellbeing of players and coaches during pregnancy and after birth.

FIFA rules provide a minimum of 14 weeks paid maternity leave for both players and coaches, a minimum of eight weeks for those who adopt a child under the age of two, and a minimum of eight weeks paid leave for women who are non-biological parents of a newborn baby.

Maternity leave for players was already introduced in 2020, but the new rules extend it to coaches, non-biological mothers and adoptive mothers.

NFL: Olympic wrestling gold medalist Gable Steveson has signed an undrafted rookie free agent contract with the Buffalo Bills.

At age 21, Steveson became the youngest athlete to win a gold medal in the super heavyweight freestyle wrestling category at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. He then went on to win two collegiate national titles at the University of Minnesota in 2021 and 2022 and was named the nation’s best collegiate wrestler twice.
