A man suspected of killing a parole officer at a Chevy Chase, Maryland, apartment on Friday night is in custody, authorities said Saturday.
Montgomery County Police say 54-year-old Emmanuel Edward Sewell was spotted driving on Interstate 64 near Hurricane, West Virginia. The suspect is expected to be extradited to Montgomery County.
Officers with the U.S. Marshals Task Force took Sewell, a registered sex offender, into custody after he was stopped for a traffic violation.
He is accused of killing 33-year-old Davis Martinez, who was found multiple times injured in the 2800 block of Terrace Drive while on a “residential inspection” in Sewell.
Sewell was charged with second-degree murder.
“This loss not only impacts his family and colleagues, for whom we once again offer our deepest condolences, but also the community he served. Law enforcement officers put their lives on the line every day to keep our communities safe, and Officer Martinez’s death is a stark reminder of the dangers we face every day,” Police Chief Marcus Jones said at a press conference Saturday.
Carolyn J. Scruggs, commissioner of the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Corrections, asked the public to pray for Martinez’s family.
“They’re the unsung heroes that we don’t hear about very often, but they’re part of law enforcement, and they do an incredible job every day,” she said.
According to police, around 5:50 p.m. on Friday, officers responded to the 2800 block of Terrace Drive in Chevy Chase to conduct a welfare check on a probation officer who had not returned to work after being seen at Sewell’s home.
When police entered the apartment, they found Martinez. Authorities have not released the exact cause of his death.
