For the first time in a while, there is a lot of excitement surrounding the Virginia Tech football team heading into the 2024 season. With many players retained and the team’s production restored, the Hokies are a year older and eager to take the next step in their rebuild under head coach Brent Pry, who is in his third year at the helm in Blacksburg.
A selection of ACC football coaches recently spoke with Athlon Sports and offer some of their perspectives with the season opening less than three months away.
Some of the ACC football coaching staff have offered some interesting opinions about the Hokies as they prepare for the 2024 season, and we’d like to share what the coaches have to say here and give our take on it.
“Who knows if they can get back to the old days when Brent Pry was talking about ‘Clemson before Clemson,’ but they’ve already proven the concept. Recruiting is going strong. They’re still developing players both in the state and in the Carolinas. And defense is the soul of the program.”
“The offensive team has finally [Grant] Wells and [Kyron] “He’s a big, solid runner, and if the team can improve his field vision and slow him down a few times, he could take the next step.”
“They’re not at the level of FSU or Clemson, but they have a good chance of being the strongest team remaining by the end of the season.”
“Pry is committed to a long-term rebuild here and it’s starting to pay off.”
There’s no doubt the defense will be better this season, but the offense could be just as good. Granted, the additions have been a big part of coordinator Chris Marve’s defense, but the offense could be a lot better than it was last season, when it won the second half of the season. The turning point came when Wells got injured and Dorons took his place.
Virginia Tech isn’t as good as Florida State or Clemson right now, but I think there’s a good chance they’ll be the best team remaining by the end of the season. They’ll need to beat Miami and Clemson to get into that category, though. It’s possible. Finally, certainly, the results under Pry and his staff are coming sooner than anyone thought they would when he was hired.
Again, we wish the 2024 season would come sooner.
