TikTok users are adding unexpected veggies to their coffee as part of the bizarre “negi latte” trend, sparking a variety of reactions.
In the culinary world, unconventional combinations that push the boundaries of traditional flavors are not uncommon, and the latest trend taking TikTok by storm is no exception.
Known as a “scallion latte,” the recipe has sparked curiosity and controversy among coffee lovers on the app because of its unexpected vegetable ingredient.
What is “Negi Latte” that’s trending on TikTok?
The scallion latte trend adds fresh scallions on top of coffee to add a crunchy texture to the drink that contrasts with the smoothness of the latte, creating a multi-sensory drinking experience.
In addition, it is said that the spiciness and subtle sweetness of the onions balances the bitterness of the coffee, creating a unique flavor that defies conventional coffee tastes.
The trend is thought to have first emerged in China, from where it caught the attention of TikTok users around the world, many of whom have been inspired to try this unusual ingredient in their morning coffee.
In a viral video for Australian-based coffee roaster goldenbrown.coffee, he gives a step-by-step guide on how to make a negi latte. “It’s a trending drink from China, so of course I have to try it,” the TikTok user said.
“First, I chop up just the green parts of a fresh scallion. Then I make an iced latte with ice, milk, and of course espresso. I then garnish the drink with lots of scallions.”
After tasting the coffee, the roaster gave his honest opinion: “You can’t even fake the good stuff. It’s awful. It ruined the coffee!”
TikTok users also took to the comments section to voice their thoughts on the unusual coffee trend: “I love onions but this is way too much,” one person wrote.
“Something I do to show my love for leeks,” another person joked. “I thought this was a joke!” a third person commented, to which the content creator replied, “Made me want to puke.”
It’s the latest food trend to take off on TikTok, after a baking recipe using cottage cheese went viral in May.
