Dozens of senior politicians queued alongside ordinary voters to cast their votes in Sunday’s election, filming the process for social media.

Marcela Guerra, speaker of the lower house and a member of the conservative Institutional Revolutionary Party, posted a video of a poll worker walking people through the paperwork. “Cinco boletas,” she yelled. “Five ballots!”

She wrote under the video: “Exercising your right to vote is essential. Voting means democracy, it means freedom, it means exercising our will as a people through voting.”

Getting your ballot is important. Voting means democracy, it means freedom, it means the voluntary vote of our citizens.

Senator Lily Telles, who is seeking reelection, shared the photo from her home state of Sonora, where she became a prominent critic of the ruling Morena party after leaving it for the conservative National Action Party (PAN).

Guadalupe Taddei Zavala, General Counsellor of the National Elections Commission, also shared several photos of ballot boxes and sent a message encouraging others to vote: “As a responsible citizen, I am present to vote in these #2024MexicanElections.”

And Hugo Lopez-Gatell Ramirez, the epidemiologist who led Mexico’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, shared the following message: “I voted with the conviction that exercising my right to vote is a way to respect the social struggle that has given people the real right to freely decide their government.”

Because politicians are prohibited from campaigning while polling stations are open, their messages are primarily non-political and focused on encouraging voters to vote.

We agree that voting is a form that respects the social struggle that is valid for the people in order to give freedom to the government. pic.twitter.com/sQwzMfwKnB
