The electoral fate of AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi and his BJP challenger Madhav Ratha will be decided today when the Hyderabad Lok Sabha Elections 2024 results will be announced after vote counting. Follow live updates of Lok Sabha Elections 2024 results.
The Hyderabad Lok Sabha seat is a key constituency in Telangana state with a sizeable Muslim population. AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi has dominated the seat for several years. But this time, the Bharatiya Janata Party has fielded Komphela Madhavi Ratha, known for promoting Sanatan Dharma.
Hyderabad has traditionally been the scene of a tough fight between the AIMIM and the Indian National Congress in Lok Sabha elections, but by fielding its first woman candidate from the constituency, the BJP is looking to change politics in the city.
This is Latha’s first election. The 49-year-old politician is a socialite whose public appearances are often the talk of social media. Usually dressed in ethnic jewellery and traditional South Indian saris, she makes sure to mention Prime Minister Narendra Modi by name in her speeches, particularly his dedication to yoga. Born in Hyderabad and raised in Santoshnagar Colony, she is now married to Vishwanath, a mechanical engineer at IIT Madras and founder and chairman of Villinch Hospital. She has three children: two daughters and one son, also studying at IIT Madras. Latha runs a number of charitable trusts, including Lopamudra Charitable Trust and Rasama Foundation. She has a non-political background and campaigns for equality, healthcare, education and livelihood rights. Latha is a trained Bharatanatyam dancer and holds a degree in political science.
The Hyderabad seat is a stronghold for Owaisi, a four-time Congress leader who defeated the BJP by a landslide margin of 2,82,000 votes in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. News18’s mega exit poll projections suggest that the BJP will find it difficult to wrest the seat from Owaisi’s home state.
However, exit polls suggest the Bharatiya Janata Party may emerge as the largest party in Telangana, with 17 MPs in the Lower House of the Rajya Sabha. Most exit polls had predicted that the ruling Indian National Congress would come second, with the BRS likely to slip to third place.
