In May 2024, electric vehicle (EV) sales in India saw a notable increase across most categories compared to April 2024. Electric two-wheeler (E2W) sales increased from 65,364 units to 76,848 units, E-rickshaw sales increased from 31,798 units to 39,476 units, E3W L5 passenger car sales surged from 4,274 units to 7,479 units. E-cart sales increased from 4,210 units to 5,531 units, and E3W L5 cargo car sales increased from 1,745 units to 2,243 units. Electric four-wheeler (E4W) sales declined slightly from 7,674 units to 7,571 units. Electric bus (E-bus) sales increased slightly from 211 units to 220 units, and the “other” category increased from 320 units to 370 units. Overall, May 2024 will show positive growth in the Indian EV market, reflecting the increasing acceptance and adoption of electric vehicles.

From May 2023 to May 2024, Electric Vehicle (EV) sales in India have steadily increased, reaching a total of 1,666,172 units. The journey began with 158,459 units sold in May 2023. In June 2023, there was a slight dip to 102,641 units due to subsidy reductions, but sales recovered in July 2023 to 116,625 units. This upward trend continued with 127,192 units in August and 128,548 units in September. Sales further increased to 140,618 units in October 2023, 154,104 units in November and 141,904 units in December. This momentum continued in 2024 with 144,981 units recorded in January and 141,653 units in February. March 2024 marked an important milestone with 212,829 units sold, the highest figure for the past 12 months. In April 2024, sales fell slightly to 115,596 units, but recovered in May 2024 to 139,738 units, ending the period on a positive note compared to the previous month.

The penetration rate of electric vehicles (EVs) in the two-wheeler (2W) category surged from 4% in April 2024 to 5% in May 2024.

The top companies this month are OLA Electric, TVS Motors and Bajaj Auto. Greaves Electric Mobility and Ather Energy recorded significant declines compared to the previous year.

The top three brands in terms of number of electric passenger vehicles 3W registered as of May 2024 are Mahindra Last Mile Mobility Ltd, Bajaj Auto and Piaggio Vehicles.

The top seller of electric buses in May 2024 was PMI Electro Mobility, followed by Tata Motors and JBM Auto.
