The Food and Drug Administration announced a recall on Saturday for cucumbers that may be contaminated with Salmonella.
Fresh Start Produce Sales, Delray, Florida, is recalling cucumbers shipped between May 17 and May 21, 2024 to wholesalers and distributors in 14 states.
The states to which cucumbers were sent are:
- Alabama
- Florida
- Georgia
- Illinois
- Maryland
- North Carolina
- New Jersey
- new york
- Ohio
- Pennsylvania
- South Carolina
- Tennessee
- Virginia
- West Virginia

The recall was initiated after the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture notified the company that testing of product samples had detected Salmonella, and the FDA is testing the affected produce to see if there is a link to the ongoing outbreak.
Consumers are encouraged to check with their grocery stores to see if the recalled cucumbers were sold at the stores where they shop, but the FDA says it is unlikely that the affected produce is in distribution in grocery stores.
Symptoms and Treatment of Salmonellosis
According to the FDA, Salmonella is a bacteria that can cause serious, sometimes fatal, infections in young children, the infirm, elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. Signs of Salmonella poisoning include:
- Bloody stool or diarrhea that does not improve for more than 3 days
- Diarrhea and a fever of 102 degrees Fahrenheit or higher
- Excessive vomiting, especially if you are unable to swallow liquids
- Signs of dehydration such as dry mouth and throat, urination less frequently, and dizziness when standing up
- Stomach pain
These symptoms most commonly appear between six hours and six days after infection. Most people recover within four to seven days, but those with weakened immune systems, such as children under five and adults over 65, may experience more severe symptoms and require treatment or hospitalization.
