2024 Election Results Live Updates: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leader Chandrababu Naidu will be in Delhi to attend a meeting of the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) on Wednesday, a day after the results of India’s recent Lok Sabha elections are in. The NDA’s largest constituent party, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which was predicted by almost every exit poll to win well over 300 seats, fell far short of its target of 370 Lok Sabha seats on its own and over 400 seats with its allies.
The BJP, which was seeking a third consecutive term in power and a third consecutive majority, won 240 seats, while the NDA’s total was 292, according to the Election Commission of India (ECI).
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to secure a third consecutive term in the top job.
Meanwhile, the opposition United India, led by the Indian National Congress, is also set to meet to decide its next course of action, with the veteran party winning 99 seats, its best showing since 2009, according to the ECI. The opposition coalition, which surprised everyone with its strong performance and now has 234 seats, may approach Nitish and Naidu and ask them to stop the BJP and NDA from winning a third consecutive term in power.
While Kumar is notorious for switching parties multiple times, Naidu quit the NDA in 2018 after the TDP won simultaneous elections in Andhra Pradesh, only to join forces with the BJP again ahead of the recent Lok Sabha elections.
