Pakistan’s Supreme Court on Wednesday issued contempt notices to 34 television channels for broadcasting an anti-judicial press conference of two politicians last month.
Senator Faisal Vawda, who was elected as an independent candidate, and Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) lawmaker Mustafa Kamal were charged with contempt of court for making comments critical of Supreme Court judges at separate press conferences.

A three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa and comprising Justices Naeem Akhtar Afghan and Irfan Saadat Khan was hearing the contempt of court case against the two.
During the hearing, Justice Isa criticised media channels for broadcasting obscene language and questioned the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority’s (Pemra) ban on coverage of court proceedings.
The court issued notices to 34 TV channels for broadcasting the derogatory remarks and directed them to take action within two weeks, and also asked Pemra to respond regarding the ban on covering court proceedings.
The court also rejected the apology submitted by Kamal in the contempt proceedings, while granting a week’s time to Vawda to file his reply in the case.
The court then adjourned the case till June 28.
