While the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) failed to secure a majority in the Indian Lok Sabha elections, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) managed to secure the magic number but fell far short of its target of 400 seats due to the Indian Union’s stellar performance.
The BJP won 240 of the 543 seats, down by more than 60 from its tally in 2019. However, the impressive performance of N Chandrababu Naidu’s Telugu Desam Party (TDP) in Andhra Pradesh and Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal (U) in Bihar helped the NDA’s tally reach 292 seats.
The TDP won 16 seats and emerged as one of the largest parties in the NDA;
Meanwhile, the Indian National Congress doubled its number of seats from 2019 and the Samajwadi Party regained its base in Uttar Pradesh, bringing the Union’s total number of seats to 234.
As Nitish and Naidu have formed anti-BJP alliances in the past, some parties in the INDIA bloc want to try to form a central government, in which case the INDIA bloc would need support from parties outside the alliance, as well as from the NDA and independents, to back up its majority claim.
The 17 non-NDA and non-Indian candidates who won in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections are:
