Have you ever had a conversation about politics that ended in a heated argument or, conversely, a cold silence?
Or maybe you simply avoid talking to people who don’t agree with you about issues you care deeply about.
On Thursday’s 9 a.m. MPR News broadcast, Angela Davis will bring you the conversation about how to communicate better in politically polarized times.
On April 24, a group of college students and other area residents gathered at Rochester’s Historic Chateau Theatre for a workshop hosted by MPR News, the University of Minnesota Rochester and Braver Angels, a nonprofit organization that aims to restore trust, respect and goodwill in American politics.
MPR News is your trusted resource for the news you need. With your support, MPR News can deliver accessible, courageous journalism and authentic conversations to everyone, without paywalls or barriers. Your support makes a big difference.
This is the latest conversation in the Talking Sense series, an election year project from MPR News aimed at helping Minnesotans have better politically difficult conversations.
The workshop was led by Braver Angels co-founder Bill Doherty and included conservatives, liberals, and independents. Listen back to the edited recording of the live event to learn concrete skills for listening respectfully and making your point heard, even if you disagree with the other person.
