Wednesday saw intense negotiations and crucial meetings by both the Congress-led Indian Alliance and the Bharatiya Janata Party-led NDA as no party was able to secure a mandate to form a government on its own.
2024 House of Representatives Election Results
A simple majority of 272 seats is needed to form a government. According to the Election Commission of India, the BJP won 240 seats, significantly down from the 303 it won in 2019. The Indian National Congress made a big advance by winning 99 seats. The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) secured 292 seats, while the INDIA bloc won more than 230 seats, defying expectations in a tight race.
NDA Block Meeting: Who was there and what happened?
1. Narendra Modi was elected leader of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) at a conference in the national capital, giving him a third consecutive term as Prime Minister.
2. Top BJP leaders including JP Nadda, Amit Shah and Rajnath Singh met NDA allies like Nitish Kumar and Chandrababu Naidu to discuss forming a new government.
3. After attending the NDA meeting, TDP leader Chandrababu Naidu confirmed his party’s support for the alliance and assured its participation in the new government.
4. The presence of leaders like Nitish Kumar and Chandrababu Naidu is crucial for the Bharatiya Janata Party, which fell 32 seats short of the 272-seat majority needed in the Lok Sabha elections.
5. The meeting was attended by key allies including Shiv Sena’s Eknath Shinde, JD(S)’s HD Kumaraswamy, Janasena’s Pawan Kalyan, LJP’s Chirag Paswan and NCP’s Praful Patel.
India Bloc Conference: Who attended and what happened?
1. After the India Block meeting on Wednesday, Indian National Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge thanked the people for their support.
2. Kharge said the Indian Union will continue to fight against the “fascist government” of the BJP led by Prime Minister Modi.
3. He said that the people’s mandate was a reaction against the BJP’s politics of hatred, corruption, rising prices, unemployment and crony capitalism.
4. The Indian Union aims to protect the Constitution of India and safeguard democracy, Kharge added.
5. The meeting, which took place at the residence of the Indian National Congress President, was attended by several leaders from across the Indian political spectrum, including Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav, Indian National Congress General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee and Popular Front leader Tejashwi Yadav.

Election Results: US praises Indian government for conducting Lok Sabha elections
Election Results Live Coverage: US State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller called India the world’s largest democracy and commended the Indian government, voters and polling officials for the successful conduct of the 2024 Indian Lok Sabha elections.
A State Department spokesman said at a press conference that the elections held over the past six weeks were the largest exercise in democracy in the history of the world.
“India is of course the world’s largest democracy and its elections over the past six weeks have been the greatest exercise in democracy in the history of the world. We applaud the Indian government, its voters and polling officials for this massive effort,” said Matthew Miller.

Election Results Live: JDU MP Rajiv Ranjan (Lalan) Singh expressed confidence in the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and added that all leaders present at the meeting reaffirmed their support for Narendra Modi and that he should become Prime Minister for the third time.
