Pakistan is one of five countries elected on Thursday as non-permanent members of the UN Security Council for a two-year term starting 2025. The other four are Somalia, Denmark, Greece and Panama.
“It is a proud moment for Pakistan to be elected to the UN Security Council for the term 2025-26 with an overwhelming 182 votes,” Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif wrote in a post on X/. He said Pakistan looked forward to working with the international community to address pressing global challenges. “We will continue to play our role in promoting peace, stability and cooperation among nations,” he said.
The five countries were elected by secret ballot by the UN General Assembly for a two-year term, from 1 January 2025 to 31 December 2026. In the two seats representing African and Asia-Pacific countries, Somalia received 179 votes and Pakistan 182 votes. In Latin America and the Caribbean, Panama received 183 votes, while in Western Europe and the Rest of the World, Denmark received 184 votes and Greece 182 votes.
Elected for the eighth time as a non-permanent member, Pakistan said it “looks forward to working closely with other members of the UN Security Council and the broader UN membership in adhering to the UN Charter, pursuing its vision of preventing war and promoting peace, fostering international cooperation for global prosperity and advancing universal respect for human rights.”
Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar said Pakistan looks forward to staying committed to the UN Charter’s vision of preventing war and promoting peace, advancing global prosperity and advancing universal respect for human rights. “We are determined to contribute effectively to the maintenance of international peace and security, in line with the mandate of the UN Security Council,” he said in a post on X.
