The U.S. national team faces a big task as they kick off their Copa America preparations with an international friendly against in-form Colombia in the capital on Saturday.
Since failing to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Colombia has been on a strong run of form under new coach Nelson Lozano, going 21 games unbeaten for more than two years.
With a match against world powerhouse Brazil coming up next week and the Copa America starting shortly thereafter, now is the time for the U.S. to put it all together and become a completely results-oriented team.
The most prominent criticism of Gregg Berhalter’s tenure as U.S. coach has been his inability to beat the best teams in the world, most notably his loss to the Netherlands in the round of 16 of the 2022 World Cup. This game will be a big test for the U.S. Men’s National Team, but it is surprising that Colombia is not considered the favorite in this matchup, with both teams having roughly equal moneyline odds.
But in a home friendly where the result doesn’t matter as much, Berhalter should be able to deliver. With Sergino Dest out, it will be hard to deal with the threat of Luis Diaz, but both teams are strong defensively and goals are at a premium. A flash of brilliance could be enough to get something.

For the U.S., a win in this match would be quite a statement, as they would become the first team to beat Colombia since the start of 2022. A draw is doable, but expecting a win is certainly a big ask.

It’s likely to be a low-scoring battle between two high-energy but defensively skilled teams, so combining these two options provides plenty of room for a scoreline to determine a winner.

Colombia will certainly rely on Luis Diaz to provide the ball, create chances and finish them. Diaz has been involved in both creating and finishing chances, but his 3-1 chances of scoring and beating the USMNT defence to score seem like great value considering that Diaz’s spark could fly at any time during the 90 minutes if the opposition lets their guard down for even a moment.
