The day after the United States’ shocking loss to Pakistan in the Men’s T20 Cricket World Cup, U.S. cricketer Corey Anderson told CNN that the U.S. team is confident it can take on any opponent.

“If they let their guard down a little bit, if they feel like they’re letting their guard down, I believe we can beat these strong teams,” Anderson said. “I don’t think Pakistan let their guard down. I think we started really well and we put the pressure on them.”

“I’ve received hundreds of messages, more than usual,” the 33-year-old said when asked about his joy after the match.

“I think it’s sent shock waves through the cricket world,” Anderson said. “It’s generated a lot of media coverage in the US, which is great. I don’t think USA Cricket is that well known in the US, so I think this has raised awareness a little bit.”

Anderson, a New Zealand native who has represented New Zealand at multiple World Cups, said his wife and two sons are American and he has been living in the country for “several years”.

Anderson went on to say that he, his family and teammates have adapted to the American culture.

“I’m very proud to be a part of this U.S. team. When the national anthem plays, I get goosebumps. I never thought I’d feel that way about another country, but I do when I’m here,” Anderson said. “I’m very proud to wear the U.S. jersey, and I think I can say on behalf of this team that we’re very proud to fly the American flag.”

The all-rounder added that he hopes this World Cup and the upcoming Olympics this summer will see the sport continue to grow in the country.

“This is just a step in the right direction to bring the sport mainstream in America,” Anderson said.

“I think we’re in a great place … I want to continue to move forward and pave the way to make the U.S. a very strong cricketing nation.”

The USA’s final two Group A matches are against India and Ireland.
