Elon Musk congratulates PM Modi on election victory, says he wants to do ‘exciting work’ in India

US tech billionaire Elon Musk on Friday congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his historic election victory and said his company looks forward to doing “exciting work” in India.

Modi will take oath of office on June 9 for his third term as prime minister.

“Congratulations @narendramodi on your victory in the world’s largest democratic election! I look forward to doing exciting work for my company in India,” Musk said in a post on X.

The congratulatory message came two months after the CEO of electric car maker Tesla and microblogging platform X postponed a planned visit to India in April, citing “very heavy obligations to Tesla”.

Musk, who was due to visit India on April 21 and 22 and meet with Prime Minister Modi, later wrote on X that he looked forward to visiting India later this year.

Musk met with Modi during his visit to the United States in June last year and expressed confidence that Tesla would soon enter the Indian market, saying he planned to visit India in 2024.

Trump’s planned visit had raised expectations that electric car maker Tesla and satellite communications venture Starlink would announce plans to set up base in India.

Musk is also expected to announce Tesla’s plans to set up a manufacturing facility in India, potentially worth billions of dollars, and to sell Tesla’s electric vehicles in the country as soon as possible.

As well as electric vehicles, he is also eyeing the Indian market for his satellite internet business, Starlink, for which he is awaiting regulatory approval.

Musk has previously called for lower import tariffs in India to allow Tesla cars to be sold there.

Musk’s plans to visit India in April were announced shortly after the Indian government unveiled a new electric vehicle policy that will offer import duty concessions to companies that set up manufacturing bases in India with investments of at least $500 million, in a move aimed at attracting global giants like Tesla.
