India and Pakistan are set to renew their rivalry in a Group A T20 World Cup match at the Nassau County Cricket Stadium in New York on Sunday. Rohit Sharma’s team comes into the match having beaten Ireland by eight wickets, while Babar Azam’s Pakistan suffered a disappointing Super Over defeat to the United States in their last match of the marquee event. India have the advantage against Pakistan after their recent form but they know they cannot take their wounded rivals lightly.
Because it’s a daytime game, there will likely be extra time if the game is delayed or stopped by rain, but it’s unlikely players will wait until the afternoon to start.
The current weather forecast suggests that rain could disrupt the match, but there is a strong possibility that fans will be able to watch the 20-over game.
Ahead of the highly-anticipated match against arch-rivals Pakistan, India captain Rohit Sharma sustained a blow to his left thumb while batting in a net session but has resumed training with medical support from the team’s medical team.
During the net session, the 37-year-old skipper was hit on his thumb and was immediately attended to by the team’s medical staff. After the ball hit Rohit’s thumb, he removed his gloves to examine the spot. A medical team from the team rushed to the ground and examined the India skipper. After being examined, the India skipper resumed his work in the nets with a full swing.
The pitch at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York, where India played their first match of the season against Ireland, has been talked about for its uneven outfield and slow-moving nature.
Notably, on the same pitch, India started well in their eight-wicket win over Ireland in a match in which the Indian captain took 52 runs off 37 at a strike rate of 140.54 but was knocked out after having to leave the crease after the 10th over due to injury.
After much debate on the pitch, the International Cricket Council released a statement on Thursday acknowledging that the pitch being used for the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup at Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York is not as stable as hoped and that groundskeepers are working hard to find a solution and provide the “best possible surface” for the remaining matches.
