Letters to the editor — November election, guns, the Constitution, political parties

Vote for people, not parties

Regarding the May 30 news article “Governor Abbott on a roll – After primary, runoff wins, Governor predicts victory for his ‘school choice’ plan.”

Governor Greg Abbott and his allies believe they have “at least 76 votes” to pass school voucher legislation. Efforts to pass the voucher plan and squeeze public school budgets can still be blocked on November 5th. There are dozens of Democrats running in battleground states who can bring moderation and reason to the Texas Legislature. With low voter turnout in the primary and even lower turnout in the May 28 runoff, do you really want a handful of radical Republican activists to choose your representatives?

In 2020, Texas did away with en bloc voting, which invites voters to consider each candidate in their district and choose the one who best aligns with their views. One candidate to consider is Scott White in the 98th House District, which covers Southlake, Colleyville, Grapevine and Keller.

Incumbent Giovanni Capriglione has consistently supported Abbott’s extreme positions. White is running to abolish the voucher system and increase funding for public schools. I have met White and found him to be a thoughtful, rational person. Research and meet the Democratic candidates in your district, and vote for them in November, regardless of party affiliation.

Biden calls immigration a ‘sham’

Regarding Wednesday’s news article “Asylum System Changes Revealed — Some Texas Mayors Praise Biden’s Immigration Restrictions.”

President Joe Biden’s new executive order will have little impact on illegal immigration. The president opened the southern border minutes after taking office, as he promised during the campaign. This was intentional. Since then, more than 6 million illegal immigrants have accepted the president’s invitation.

Biden has no plans to repeal or reinstate former President Donald Trump’s executive orders on immigration, which had some effect in curbing illegal immigration, and instead prefers to blame Trump whenever he gets the chance and complain that he doesn’t have the authority to curb immigration.

This latest order allows 2,500 people to enter the country per day. Biden appears to want to admit as many immigrants as possible into the country and has not and will not enforce immigration laws. If this latest attempt was to limit or stop illegal immigration, he would not have issued it. His actions are a “show.”

Abbott creates ‘confusion’ over guns

Subject: “There’s a lot of confusion,” by John R. Dorgan, Monday Letters.

I agree with the confusing and scary gun laws (or non-laws) enacted by our Governor that Dorgan mentioned in his letter. We have literally created a “gun season” when we can all own guns without a license, background check, etc., and can shoot someone if we feel threatened (which is completely different than, say, shooting someone who breaks into our home).

And just to make sure we get the recipe right, Governor Greg Abbott, in his pardon proclamation, praised Daniel Perry for calling the police immediately after killing Garrett Foster. That is, prompt reporting of the incident appears to be one piece of evidence of innocence.

“God help me” to Trump

Article II, Section 4 of the United States Constitution states that “The President, Vice President, and all civil officers of the United States shall be removed from Office on Impeachment for, and Conviction of, Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors.”

I have voted primarily as a Republican my whole life, and now intellectuals in both parties are declaring that someone with a high crime or misdemeanor conviction can lead our great country.

We are seriously considering placing in the highest office in the land a convicted felon, who has engaged in encouraging voters to tamper with the election and who has himself claimed the 2020 Presidential election was stolen.

Wake up America! Why would we want someone who would use our Constitution (just like Vladimir Putin uses Russia’s Constitution) to establish himself as the leader of the free world? God help us!

Do I have any other choice? Really? I do!

Republicans, stop being afraid of the former president. Show some mature leadership. Give me whoever I can vote for in November.

Ernest Leon Morrison, Frisco

Revenge and evil permeate politics

“The Founding Fathers Would Laugh: Their System Worked. The Trump Verdict Proves No One is Above the Law, and That Person May Be Restored to Power by the People,” by Jeffrey A. Engel, June 1 opinion.

In his farewell address, George Washington said, “The alternate domination of one faction over another, exacerbated by the vindictiveness which is inherent in party dissension, is in itself a terrible tyranny.”

President John Adams similarly worried that “the division of the Republic into two great parties is to be feared as a great political evil.”

America is facing these concerns right now. Since Bill Clinton’s impeachment, both political parties have used their power to try to oust the president or influence the election. An appeals court will ultimately decide whether Donald Trump’s conviction will stand. But thankfully, it is up to the people (not political parties or a Manhattan criminal court) to decide what criteria they consider important in determining who should be president.

I agree with Engel that our Founding Fathers would smile that this system still works, but like Washington and Adams, I worry about our partisan political system, whether it has been exploited by a “spirit of revenge” and is now in danger of becoming “the great political evil.”

Raymond J. Termini, Dallas/Turtle Creek
