In December 2022, Katie Holmes attended the iHeartRadio Jingle Ball in a mini dress over jeans that immediately recalled the outfits worn by Disney starlets at the Teen Choice Awards circa 2005. The spaghetti-strap camisole dresses, denim pedal pushers, knee-thin cotton scarves, and weird Newsie caps sparked a morbid curiosity in those old enough to have first experienced the trend. “This is the real Y2K, but you guys aren’t ready for the conversation,” she tweeted in a tweet that has now garnered more than 165,000 likes.
In fact, the jeans-over-dress look was a rare Holmes faux pas, a look that has made countless headlines on this website for its effortless urban flair, effortlessly combining basic garments that every woman can wear. That’s because it came too early in the trouser-over-dress revival, and it played up the jaw-dropping 2000s look a little too strongly. When people start layering dresses and skirts over trousers in 2024 (see the latest collections from Chopova Rowena, Lure and Nowruz), things are likely to be a little less denim and a little less casual (unless you’re a Pink Panthers girl or went to Goldsmiths).
Emily Ratajkowski’s look at Adwoa Aboah’s Girls Talk fundraising gala is a perfect example of this once-maligned trend. Last night, she was photographed in a longline halter dress paired with tailored trousers (both in silk), strappy heels and a chainmail Rabanne handbag. Perhaps Emily Ratajkowski took inspiration from the British designer’s custom Burberry look. trendChioma Nnadi, head of editorial content at this year’s Met Gala, wore a ruffled flaxen dress with tuxedo pants, a look that harkened back to the 2000s without veering into sartorial territory. Even the most controversial trends make a comeback, but they’re less likely to be broadcast from the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
