NEW DELHI: The Indian National Congress will examine the results of each constituency to understand from the root where it went wrong in some states where it had hoped for a better performance in the Lok Sabha elections, ensure accountability and take corrective measures to get everything right.
Indian National Congress general secretary (organisation) KC Venugopal said the party’s central strategy cell was collating polling station-wise votes from across the country and preparing an analysis that would help the party understand what went wrong in Karnataka, Himachal Pradesh and Telangana.
The party had hoped for better results not only in the ruling states but also in Delhi, Madhya Pradesh and Uttarakhand, where it had allied with the AAP, but failed to win a single seat in these states.
Indian National Congress Party leader Mallikarjun Kharge has already announced that he will meet soon to take “urgent remedial measures” in states where the party has not performed as well as it should, despite “an overall revival and rejuvenation”.
Kharge will soon set up a committee to look into the issue in these states.
“It would be a failure in our duty to fail to take note of the disappointing performance” in some states, the CWC resolution said, and that “urgent steps” should and would be taken to “address shortcomings” in states where the party “had every reason to expect better results and those expectations were not met.”
While there was no specific discussion on states at the CWC, a senior leader said Karnataka’s performance was affected by the fielding of over a dozen ministerial-related people and the way Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar were operating.
A senior Kerala leader said the BJP’s launch of the election campaign was unexpected and that it had not done enough to counter saffron candidate Suresh Gopi’s expectations of a walkover victory. He said Gopi had been active in Thrissur for the past five years and had benefited from such campaigning.
