European Parliament seat allocation forecast
The centre-right European People’s Party (EPP) will remain the largest party in the European Parliament, according to initial reports.
With all polls closing on Sunday, here are our predictions:
The European People’s Party (EPP), a centre-right coalition of European political parties, is set to remain the largest party in the European Parliament, according to the latest forecasts released by Brussels after four days of EU-wide elections.
The European People’s Party could win 189 seats in the 720-seat parliament, while the second-placed Social Democrats (S&D) could win 135 seats.
If approved, the results would increase Ursula von der Leyen’s chances of securing a second term as president of the European Commission, the European Union’s executive arm.
“Today is a good day for the European People’s Party,” von der Leyen said. “Friends, we won the European elections,” she added.
The liberal, pro-European group Renew Europe is expected to win 80 seats, while the European Group of Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) could win 72 seats.
The right-wing populist, eurosceptic Identity Democrats (ID) are aiming to win around 58 seats, followed by the environmentally friendly Greens with 52.
The Left group is expected to win 36 seats, while unaffiliated parties, including the far-right Alternative for Germany, could win 46 seats.
The remaining 52 seats are expected to be won by independents or newly elected parties.
