Pakistan loses to India in T20 World Cup 2024 match©AFP
The T20 World Cup 2024 has been a disappointing one so far for the Pakistan cricket team. Babar Azam’s side lost to India by six runs on Sunday. It was Pakistan’s second defeat in two matches after being shocked by the USA in their first group stage encounter. Naseem Shah and Haris Rauf took three wickets each to bowl India out for 119 but disciplined play from the Indian pacers, especially Jasprit Bumrah, meant Pakistan were heavily defeated. The loss against India was also a major blow to Pakistan’s chances of progressing to the Super Eight stage of the tournament.
Pakistan have zero points after two matches and are now looking very unlikely to qualify. Babar Azam’s team will have to win their two remaining matches against Canada and Ireland and hope that the USA and Canada don’t win any more matches.
Even if Pakistan wins both games and the US loses their remaining two, their place in the Super 8 will depend on their Net Run Rate (NRR). Both teams have four points from four matches and Pakistan will need some results to have an advantage.
Speedster Jasprit Boomer, who was adjudged man of the match after the match, was extremely proud of his performance against Pakistan.
“I feel really good. I was a bit behind but after the sun came out I felt the wicket was a bit better. I played really disciplined so I feel good. I tried to hit the seams as much as possible, hit as clear as possible. Everything went well so I’m happy. I feel like I’m playing for India. I’m really happy with the support and it gives me energy on the field. I’m just focused on the now. I’ve played two matches and I’ve played really well. I’m just going to try to do my thing and play well,” Bumrah said after the match.
