A new electric hot hatch is coming to the market: the new BYD Seal 06GT has been revealed in China ahead of its official market debut later this year.
BYD unveiled the new Ocean-M at the Beijing auto show in April, calling it its first RWD high-performance electric hatchback.
The latest addition to the Ocean series, this electric hatchback takes inspiration from seal and dolphin design. The Ocean-M is based on the new e-platform 3.0 Evo that is being used for the new Sea Lion 07 electric SUV, a rival to the Tesla Model Y.
BYD claims that the new platform features “the world’s first full-scenario intelligent pulse self-heating technology,” which BYD says will reduce charging times by 40% even in extreme cold environments.
The new platform also features the fastest production motor (23,000 rpm) and a 12-in-1 smart e-drive system.
According to leaked information from China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), both single-motor and dual-motor BYD Seal 06GT models are in the works.

The single-motor model will likely use 160 kW (215 hp) at the rear, while the dual-motor version will feature a more powerful 200 kW (268 hp) rear motor and a 110 kW (148 hp) front motor.
The BYD Seal 06GT is available with a choice of 59.52 kWh or 72.96 kWh battery packs, giving a CLTC range of up to 505 km (314 miles) or 605 km (376 miles).
Measuring 4,630mm in length, 1,880mm in width and 1,490mm in height, the new electric hatchback is positioned between the Dolphin and Seal in BYD’s Ocean lineup.
The BYD Seal 06GT will be available at a starting price of $20,700 to $27,600 (150,000 to 200,000 yuan). Sales are expected to begin in the coming months, with exports expected in 2025.
according to Car News ChinaBYD is believed to have developed the electric hot hatch specifically for export to Europe.
Meanwhile, the EU announced pre-announced tariffs on Chinese-made EV imports on Wednesday. For BYD, the EU will impose an additional 17.4% tariff. BYD and other Chinese EV makers will have the opportunity to explain the accuracy of the investigation’s findings. If no solution is found by July 4, 2024, new tariffs will be imposed.
BYD believes it can overcome the impact of potential EU tariffs as it plans to build two factories in Europe, with the Hungarian factory already under construction and due to start production next year.
