The UK is preparing for a general election on July 4, 2024. Anticipation is building not only about who will lead the country, but also when the results will be announced.
Countdown to Election Day
Parliament was dissolved on Thursday 30 May 2024, starting the election process. This also marks the end of the legislative session, during which MPs cease to function until after the election. All 650 constituencies across the UK remain vacant.
Important dates leading up to the election
The outcome of the election will determine the prime minister and the ruling party. Parliament can also be hung, meaning no party wins a majority of seats. In such cases, negotiations for a coalition government or minority coalition may take place. This can affect the stability and policy agenda of the next government.
Once the results are announced, Parliament will reconvene on Tuesday, 9 July to elect a Speaker and swear in members. The Opening Ceremony will take place on Wednesday, 17 July, marking the official start of the Parliamentary session. The King will take to the podium to deliver a speech and outline the Government’s legislative agenda.
The outcome of the general election will undoubtedly shape the future of the country, with policy uncertainty surrounding key issues such as health, education and the economy.
