Prominent Texas evangelical pastor Dr. Tony Evans has stepped down from church leadership.
Evans, senior pastor of Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship in Dallas, Texas, said in a statement posted on the church’s website Sunday that he was resigning because of “sins” he did not name.
“The foundation of our pastoral ministry has always been to follow God’s Word, which is the highest standard of absolute truth that we must follow,” Evans’ statement read. “When we fall short of that standard because of sin, we must repent and restore our relationship with God. Several years ago, I fell short of that standard, and therefore I must apply to myself the same biblical standard of repentance and restoration that I have applied to others.”
He said Evans “did not commit a crime” but “showed a lack of good judgement in his actions”.

The church said the decision to have Evans step down came after “much prayer and multiple meetings” between him and church elders.
The church’s pastor, Bobby Gibson, and church elders plan to provide more information about interim leadership and the future in the coming days.
