Liverpool have reportedly made Benfica midfielder Joao Neves their top transfer target in the summer transfer window.
The teenager has established himself in the Benfica side over the past two seasons and has built a reputation as one of the most promising players outside of Europe’s top five leagues.
Neves made 55 appearances in all competitions for Portugal in the 2023-24 season and was named Primeira Liga Midfielder of the Month five times.
The 19-year-old has already made seven appearances for Portugal and was included in their squad for this summer’s European Championships, and according to Portuguese outlet Correio da Manha, Liverpool will be making further efforts to sign him this summer, ahead of other top European clubs.
However, Benfica are reluctant to sanction the sale of Neves and will demand the full 120 million euros (£101.3 million) for the midfielder to leave the Estadio da Luz – a figure that would be a club-record deal for the Reds, surpassing the £75 million they paid to sign Virgil van Dijk from Southampton in 2018.
Liverpool are believed to be monitoring several Portuguese transfer targets and are interested in Benfica defender Antonio Silva and Sporting Lisbon centre-back Gonzalo Inacio, who both join Neves in Portugal’s squad for Euro 2024. Liverpool also signed Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez from the Primeira Liga club in the recent transfer window.
