Pakistan said on Thursday it does not comment on India’s recently concluded elections or on India’s internal issues.
Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch made the remarks at a weekly press conference.
Narendra Modi was sworn in as prime minister for a record third term on Sunday after the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) National Democratic Alliance (NDP) government won general elections.
“Pakistan does not comment on India’s internal elections or internal issues,” she said when asked to comment on the Indian elections.
She also said there was no “exchange of letters” between the leaders of the two countries, but Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif tweeted his congratulations to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on taking oath of office.
“It is customary for Heads of State and Government to congratulate their counterparts on assuming their respective offices and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s congratulatory tweet was in that context. You may have also seen the response of the Prime Minister of India. I have said that these messages are of a customary nature and I do not wish to elaborate further,” she said.
Shehbaz and his brother Nawaz Sharif, the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz leader, on Monday congratulated Modi on being sworn in as prime minister for a third consecutive term.
