The 124th U.S. Open is currently underway at Pinehurst No. 2 in Pinehurst, North Carolina.
Right from the start, the field is chasing top-ranked Scottie Scheffler, who is playing better than Tiger Woods has in his prime, and who will start the afternoon round (1:24 p.m. ET to be exact) along with Rory McIlroy and Xander Schauffele.
So far, not many golfers have scored below par.
Two-time winner Brooks Koepka initially looked like he had a shot at a third victory, having briefly tied for the lead before three bogeys in the closing stages brought him back to par for the day.
Instead, it was Patrick Cantlay who took the early lead, scoring three birdies in the final five holes of the day for a 5-under 65 that put him two strokes ahead of the field entering the clubhouse. Ludvig Oberg closed the gap slightly with a 4-under 66 in his first U.S. Open round.
Woods, meanwhile, struggled. After a birdie on the first day, he reeled off five birdies in the next seven holes around the turn to finish with a 4-over 74. He’ll need a big performance on Friday to make the cut, something he didn’t get at last month’s PGA Championship.

Rory did it again
Rory McIlroy scored consecutive birdies after an easy chip-in on the fifth hole. McIlroy is now two under par, just three strokes behind Patrick Cantlay.
Rory McIlroy under par
Rory McIlroy recorded three straight pars in his opening round before finally finding himself in the red.
Patrick Cantlay after the opening round
Patrick Cantlay after shooting 65 in the opening round:
Scheffler’s form is poor in the early stages
We’ve seen so much near-perfect play from Scottie Scheffler lately that any less-than-perfect play stands out, but that’s exactly what we’ve seen over the past four holes: Scheffler has missed the fairway both left and right and is struggling a bit to make par.
On the third hole, he hit his tee shot into a bunker on the left side, then into a greenside bunker and hit a long putt for par that fell just short, resulting in a bogey for the world number one.
Xander is in the red
Xander Schauffele took an early lead in the battle of the big dogs, and a birdie on the second hole put him at 1 under. Scheffler and McIlroy were still tied.
Featured groups in progress
The top three players in the world just happened to be paired together. It’s strange.
Either way, Scottie Scheffler (1), Xander Schauffele (2) and Rory McIlroy got off to a good start, all three making par on the first hole.

Ludvig Auberg takes sole second place
Ludvig Oberg won his first round in a commanding fashion at the U.S. Open and is now in sole second place at four under par, just one stroke behind Patrick Cantlay.
Patrick Cantlay leads by two strokes
Great finish from Patrick Cantlay, who opened the U.S. Open with three birdies in the final five holes to take the lead with a 5-under 65. He took just 23 putts today, the lowest score of his career in a major championship, and the 65 was the lowest score ever by any player other than Martin Kaymer in the opening round of the U.S. Open at Pinehurst.
That gave Cantlay a two-stroke lead over Finau, Oberg and Pavon entering the clubhouse.
Tiger Woods’ 4-over 74
Here’s a closer look at Tiger Woods’ opening round at Pinehurst.
Morikawa steps up to E
It was a perfect finish for Collin Morikawa, who recorded consecutive birdies thanks to a big putt on the 18th hole to finish with a par 70. He is currently tied for 15th place.
Tiger Woods finished 4 over par
Tiger Woods’ day was over. He shot a four-over 74 in the opening round of the U.S. Open, but made some big par saves to limit the damage.
Still, Woods was nine strokes behind the leader when he entered the clubhouse and will need a strong performance tomorrow to qualify.

Oberg retreats
Ludvig Oberg’s time in the lead didn’t last long, as a bogey on the par-3 sixth hole dropped him to 3 under par. He now sits alone in third place, one stroke behind Cantlay and Pavon.
Auberg and Cantlay join Pavon in the lead
Mathieu Pavone’s lead was gone when Ludvig Oberg tapped in for birdie to move to four under and Patrick Cantlay made two consecutive birdies to join them in the lead.
Neil Shipley advances to 2 under
Neil Shipley comes from the deep! The amateur made a string of birdies on the turn and is now two strokes behind.
Tiger Woods scores another birdie
Finally, after a poor start, Tiger Woods got another birdie.
Woods hit a 260-yard approach onto the par-5 fifth hole for an easy two-putt birdie, putting him at three over par.
Leaderboard Updates
Mathieu Pavon made a bogey to cut the lead to just one stroke, but Brooks Koepka also made a bogey to fall back to two strokes behind.
Here’s the current status at the top of the initial leaderboard:
1. Pavon -4 (11)
T2.Henry -3 (13*)
T2. Aberg -3 (12*)
T4. Koepka -2 (13)
T4. Cantlay -2 (13*)
T4. Molinari -2 (10*)
Tiger continues to stumble
What a tough day for Tiger Woods. Five bogeys in his final seven holes dropped him to four over par, and it’s been mostly downhill since he started the day with a birdie.
Mathieu Pavon takes the lead
The early group had a new solo leader, Matthew Pavone, who made a big eagle on the 10th hole to move to 5 under and take the lead by two strokes, his second of the day.
Brooks has friends
Ludvig Aberg and France’s Mathieu Pavon joined Koepka at 3 under, not many birdies but some.
