Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang on June 14 announced his decision to step down from the Sorengu Chakun constituency and continue to represent the Lenok constituency.
The Sikkim Krantikari Morcha’s top leaders were elected from two seats in the state assembly elections. The SKM won a landslide victory in the elections, winning 31 out of 32 constituencies.
“I apologise to the people of Soren Chakun constituency. I have stepped down and resolved to allow honest and loyal party cadres to serve you as your MP,” Tamang said in a Facebook post.
The announcement came a day before the SKM top leadership was obliged to take a decision under Article 67/A of the Election Control Rules, 1961, which states that one of the two constituencies has to be surrendered within 14 days of the announcement of the results.
“Tomorrow, June 15, is the last day for this decision. It is with a heavy heart that I must make this momentous announcement today,” said Tamang, who is the seven-term, and the senior-most member of the state assembly.
In the last Assembly, Soren Chakun was represented by Tamang’s son Aditya.
Tamang’s wife, Krishna Kumari Rai, resigned from her state assembly seat from Namchi Singithang constituency on June 13, just a day after she was sworn in. She had won the seat in the recently concluded state assembly elections, defeating Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) candidate Bimal Rai.
