WASHINGTON – Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pennsylvania, was speeding and “at fault” for a car crash Sunday that sent him, his wife and another driver to the hospital, according to a Maryland State Police report obtained by USA Today.
According to the six-page report, Fetterman was driving a Chevrolet Traverse and passed a bystander “at a high rate of speed, substantially exceeding the speed limit,” on Interstate 70 in northwestern Maryland before rear-ending a Chevrolet Impala near the exit for Interstate 68 at about 7:45 a.m. The speed limit was 70 mph.
Neither Fetterman nor the other driver were tested for alcohol or drugs, according to the report. No charges have been filed and the investigation is ongoing, according to a statement from Maryland State Police to USA Today earlier this week. A spokesman for Fetterman did not immediately respond to a request for comment Wednesday.
Both vehicles were towed from the scene, and Fetterman, his wife, Gisele Fetterman, and the driver of the other car, a 62-year-old woman from Pennsylvania, were taken by ambulance to War Memorial Hospital in West Virginia.
USA Today attempted to contact witnesses to the accident and the other driver but was unable to reach them Wednesday. The names of the woman hit by Fetterman and the witnesses were listed in police public records but are not being published by USA Today to protect the privacy of the individuals.

A spokesman for Senator Fetterman said Mr. Fetterman was treated for a bruised shoulder. The couple was released from the hospital Sunday afternoon and posted a video on X thanking well-wishers for their well wishes. “While this was not the best way to spend our 16th wedding anniversary, we are doing well and happy to be back home to Braddock with our family,” the couple wrote.
Fetterman has served in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives since 2023. He previously served as Pennsylvania’s lieutenant governor and mayor of Braddock, a suburb of Pittsburgh.
