Thirteen newly elected members of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly took oath at Vidhan Bhavan on Friday.

After the newly elected 100-member senate were sworn in, the Samajwadi Party’s strength increased to 10 and it took over the position of Leader of Opposition in the Lower House.

On March 14, 13 candidates – 10 from the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and three from the Samajwadi Party – were declared elected unopposed in the biennial elections to the Uttar Pradesh state assembly.

The SP was previously ineligible for the LoP post as it did not have the required number of MLCs. The BJP-led NDA has a huge majority in the Legislative Council as well as the Vidhan Sabha in Uttar Pradesh.

Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council Principal Secretary Rajesh Singh told news agency PTI that the required number of LoP posts has been secured by the SP.

On Friday evening, Speaker of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council Kunwar Manvendra Singh administered the oath of office to the 13 newly elected legislators at Tilak Hall in Vidhan Bhavan.

Among the state legislators who took oath were Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)’s Dr Mahendra Singh, Vijay Bahadur Pathak, Ashok Kataria, Ramtirth Singhal, Santosh Singh, Dharmendra Singh and Mohit Beniwal.

NDA ally Apna Dal’s Ashish Patel, Sri Lankan National Congress’ Vicelal and RLD’s Yogesh Chaudhary also took oath. Samajwadi Party’s Balram Yadav, Shah Alam and Kiran Pal Kashyap also took oath at the Vidhan Bhavan.
