Former Arsenal striker Alan Smith said he will be “mourned by many former team-mates” following the death of Kevin Campbell, who was 54.

Campbell has been an Arsenal fan since he was a boy, joining the club at the age of 15 and playing his way through the club’s youth ranks.

The striker made his first-team debut for the club in 1988 after loan spells at Leyton Orient and Leicester City.

He played 22 games and scored nine goals in Arsenal’s title-winning 1990-91 season.

Campbell went on to help Arsenal win the FA Cup and League Cup Double in 1993 and the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1994.

His Arsenal career ended with a move to Nottingham Forest in 1995. In total, he made 228 appearances for Arsenal’s first team, scoring 59 goals.

“To have a career like his is just incredible,” Smith told Sky Sports. “He was ambitious and driven to do well.”

“When I look at the pictures I see his big smile – that was his personality. He had a kind heart and was popular with all the boys.”

“He was from South London, he was successful and he always appreciated that. He never took for granted where he was. He was a hard worker throughout his whole career.”

“He will never be forgotten by anyone who played with him and shared a locker room with him. He will be deeply missed by many of his former teammates.”

“It’s a truly tragic day.”
