RSS’s Indresh Kumar changes tune after controversial ‘arrogant’ remarks against BJP

RSS leader Indresh Kumar, who was in hot water for alleging that the BJP’s arrogance was responsible for its fall in the Indian parliament to 241 seats, tried to clarify his remarks by saying the poll results showed that those who were opposed to Lord Rama had lost the parliamentary elections and those whose main goal was to build a Rama temple had returned to power.

“The mood in the country is now very clear. Those who were against Lord Rama are not in power. Those whose goal is to respect Lord Rama are in power and the third government has been formed under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” Kumar was now quoted as saying. NDTV.

Kumar’s initial comments came after RSS leader Mohan Bhagwat said “ahankar (arrogance)” should not be found in a true “sevak”.

The BJP and RSS are set to hold the ‘Samanwaya’ elections on July 31.

Speaking at an event on the outskirts of Jaipur in Rajasthan state, the RSS national executive member criticised the BJP without naming it. “A party that practised ‘bhakti’ but got arrogant was stopped by 241 (240) votes but then became the largest party,” Kumar said.

“There is no rift between the RSS and the BJP,” the paper quoted RSS sources as saying, adding, “Bhagwat’s speech was not much different from his speeches after the 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha elections. He always refers to important events like national elections in his speeches. But it was misconstrued and taken out of context, creating confusion. His ‘arrogant’ remarks were not directed at Prime Minister Narendra Modi or any BJP leader.”

Kumar’s comments come at a time when the RSS has been voicing its displeasure with the BJP. Without naming the BJP, RSS leader Mohan Bhagwat said at a rally on Monday that elections should be a “consensus-building” process and the opposition should be recognised as a “pratipaksh” (counterpart). The RSS’s mouthpiece, The Organiser, in an article by RSS member Ratan Sharda, also said the “false pride” of BJP leaders had made them believe that RSS activists were “rural”.
