Unbeaten WBA lightweight world champion Gervonta Davis returns to the ring after a 14-month hiatus Saturday (8 p.m. ET, Prime Video PPV) to face Frank “The Ghost” Martin (18-0, 12 KOs) at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
Davis (29-0, 27 KOs) hasn’t fought since April 22, 2023, when he faced off in the biggest fight of his career against one of boxing’s biggest stars, Ryan Garcia. It took Davis just two rounds to find Garcia’s biggest weakness and score a knockdown, then a few more to really capitalize on Garcia’s mistakes. In the seventh round of their 136-pound catchweight bout, Davis landed a devastating body shot that knocked Garcia backwards and to his knees. Garcia couldn’t recover in time.

The win solidified Davis’ status as one of the fighters to watch in boxing, but the Baltimore native soon found himself behind bars. Just weeks after the Garcia fight, Davis pleaded guilty to four misdemeanor charges stemming from a hit-and-run crash in 2020 that left four people, including a pregnant woman, injured. He was sentenced to 90 days of house arrest but was taken into custody for violating the terms of his sentence.
Davis spent 44 days in a Baltimore jail and it has been 420 days since he last stepped into the ring. Will his long hiatus and personal troubles affect the champion’s bout Saturday night against unbeaten but unknown Martin? The oddsmakers don’t seem to think so. BetMGM has Davis at -650 to win and Martin at +450. Davis is -190 to win by KO/TKO/technical decision or DQ.
In the co-main event, two-time 168-pound champion David Benavidez will make his light heavyweight debut against Oleksandr Gvozdyk for the interim WBC light heavyweight world title.
