No matter how many gold medals a swimmer has, they’re not guaranteed a place in Paris. Even if they hold a world record, they’re not guaranteed a spot in the Olympics. The only way a swimmer can guarantee a spot is by winning in Indianapolis.
Swimmers will gather at Lucas Oil Stadium to compete for a spot on the U.S. Olympic Swimming Team and only if they beat other American swimmers will they be able to represent the red, white and blue in Paris.
The top two swimmers in each event will automatically be added to the U.S. Olympic Team roster as long as they also have an Olympic qualifying time. Swimmers who place 1st or 2nd in an event but do not have an OQT may still be considered for qualification if their time is an Olympic qualifying time and there are fewer than 852 qualified swimmers worldwide.
Relay teams are selected by the best performing athletes in their corresponding individual events. For example, the top four athletes in the 100m will be selected for the 4x100m relay team. Unlike individual events, relay athletes can be selected even if they come third or fourth in their respective events.
