GURGAON: The Lok Sabha election results are “just the beginning” and “the real fight is ahead,” former chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda said at a meeting with Congress Party workers in Karnal on Sunday. The rally, held at former chief minister and Karnal MP Manohar Lal Khattar’s base on Sunday, was the first in a series of meetings the Congress Party is planning to ramp up its campaign for the upcoming Haryana assembly polls. The party, which won five of Haryana’s 10 Lok Sabha seats this year, is hoping to make a breakthrough in the state elections, likely to be held in October this year. Hooda was joined at the meeting by Rohtak MP and his son Deepender Hooda and state party president Udaybhan. Hooda thanked party workers who worked day and night for the assembly elections and said the results were good. “We should neither stop nor succumb in the next three months. We should keep moving forward till our goal is achieved,” he said. The party is planning similar meetings with cadres from districts like Kurukshetra, Kaithal, Yamunanagar, Panchkula, Sonipat, Panipat, Jind, Ambala, Faridabad, Gurgaon, Hisar and Rohtak. According to sources, the idea is to improve the party’s performance in the GT Road belt, which includes 30 of Haryana’s 90 assembly seats. In the Lok Sabha elections, the Congress lost both Karnal and Kurukshetra seats in this belt. The region is the stronghold of former chief minister Khattar, who was elected MP from Karnal in the recent elections. Apart from Punjabi voters who generally support Khattar, general class voters in the region usually opt for the BJP. Addressing the workers, Indian National Congress state unit chief Udaybhan on Sunday said efforts are on to organise and strengthen the party’s election preparations. “The main objective of this meeting is to prepare the workers for the upcoming state assembly elections. The workers will be urged to engage with the people, understand their problems and commit to solutions through people-friendly policies,” he said. He said the party’s performance in the Lok Sabha has been impressive and that the BJP’s tally of seats in state assemblies has fallen from 79 in the 2019 general elections to 44 this time. Also, the Indian National Congress’ lead has increased from 10 seats to 46 seats.
